Season 5 Finale - Week 31
Our 151st COC dodge ball event and season 5 finale saw an all time record breaking crowd of 53 enthusiastic participants battle it out one last time for the most coveted prize in all of COC sports, the Dodge Ball Cup and vie for the right to have their name forever engraved on the infamous, Dodge Ball Wall of Fame!
It was a truly festive evening as participants were greeted with a wide variety of delicious dodge balls (timbits) and a massive wall of fame assembled on the gymnasium wall, featuring the entire 5 year history of this event! Once everyone had settled in, we kicked things off with a double milestone celebration in recognition of Mandy’s 100th and Franco’s 600th event with the club. Instead of the usual ball cap, each was presented with a very stylish pair of shades (just in time of summer) as well as a small gift. For Mandy, it was a tin of her favourite coffee and a custom made mug featuring her classic “matrix” stance with Darwin, Ian and Clayton’s round shaped heads coming at her like dodge balls while Franco received a custom made apron (he’s a great cook) featuring a classic shot of him enjoying one of his favourite treats!
At the conclusion of the milestone festivities we moved right into the awards ceremony where we recognized several members for their various accomplishments this season. The following is a list of tonight’s recipients :
IRON MAN AWARD Presented to: Ian Hofer, Mami Ishihara, Hua Zhong (Jenny) and Yannick Gentes in recognition of their perfect attendance record. (present at all 31 events this season). Each of them received an iron man medal and 2 free event passes for next season.
MOST VALUABLE PLAYER Presented to: Ian Hofer in recognition of his outstanding play and high level of sportsmanship throughout the season. Ian finished first in the overall Medal Standings amassing 130 points including an impressive 16 gold medals!
ALMOST AS GOOD AS IAN AWARD Presented to: Darwin Babb who finished 2nd overall with 117 points including 12 gold medals!
PINMANSHIP AWARD This award is normally presented to the individual who collects the most pins (last place finishes) in a single season, but since that person happened to be me – I decided to skip it this year. LOL. For the record though, tonight marked my 10th time. Ugh!
LUCKY 7 DRAW In the spirit of giving everyone a chance to walk away with a little something tonight, seven random names were drawn and each individual was awarded a $10 gift certificate for use at BP’s afterwards. Congratulations to all the winners!
Just before wrapping up the opening ceremonies the group surprised me with an amazing large autographed collage and extremely generous BP’s gift card as a thank you for organizing. It was truly unexpected but greatly appreciated and I want to thank you all again for your thoughtfulness.

And after all that we still had a game to play so attendees quickly gathered into their respective teams, introduced themselves and came up with a team name for the tournament. After a few minutes of team bonding, the names were submitted and the quest for GOLD began with the first of 20 round robin match ups.
Each team played 10 times to determine their seeding for the playoffs. It was a thrilling race as the 6-4 Screwballs edged out both Green Finale (5-4-1) and Last Chance (5-5) to grab top spot while Hiro’s Trader did their best to keep up while collecting a 3-6-1 record.
In the semi-finals, both series ended quickly as the #1 ranked Screwballs made short work of cellar dweller Hiro’s Trader while 2nd place Green Finale swept Last Chance 2-0 to set up a championship final between the top 2 teams.
In the medal round, Last Chance found themselves on the wrong end of yet another series sweep, this time to bronze medalist Hiro’s Trader. In other action, a tie breaker was required between Green Finale and the Screwballs to determine the final champion of the season and when the dust settled Green Finale was the only team left standing. Congratulations Green Finale on your well deserved Dodge Ball Cup victory tonight!
After the tournament, most of us made our way over to BP’s where we took over the entire lounge in celebration of yet another fantastically fun season of COC Dodge Ball! Once again a gigantic delicious cake decorated with photos of this season's gold medal teams was enjoyed by all.
