Roundtrip Stats:
Distance: 18 km
Elevation Gain: 1170 m
Time: 7:45 hours
For a relatively unknown mountain, this is a surprisingly short and straight forward ascent. We parked at the parking area near the Mosquito Creek campground / hostel and crossed the highway to get on the Mosquito Creek / Molar Pass trail. Right away, we could see our objective, Mosquito Mountain's summit, and route up the southwest ridge. A little treeless highpoint along the end of the southwest ridge is a good point to aim for.
We followed the Mosquito Creek trial until the backcountry campground. At the back of the outhouse is where we started bushwhacking. Staying on the climber's left, without losing elevation, provides the least amount of bushwhacking. Soon we were faced with giant boulders on a steep slope. We scrambled up these to gain the southwest ridge, but these can be avoided by circling around on the climber's left. When we reached the top of the steep slope, we could see the treeless highpoint. From here, it's just a matter of following the ridge.
The location of Mosquito Mountain provides great views of surrounding passes and peaks. The register, an old Dr Scholl's Moleskin container, contained entries from 1979! Many alpine tarns can be seen below.
