Does it make sense that the summit actually is not the highest point of a mountain? This conversation started on the drive out and continued until after we reached the official summit of Sheol Mt.

Regardless, it was a pleasant scramble with incredible views.

We stayed on Paradise Valley Trail for about an hour then turned right onto a closed trail from a no-hiking sign. Soon two obvious gullies came into the view. After comparing to the picture from Kane’s book, we headed towards the gully on the right hand side, which looks more like an ‘S’. The right branch of the gully became very steep once it splits half way, but also provided some enjoyable hands-on scrambling.

Once above the gully, half of the group gained the ridge from left side, and the rest of us stayed about 10m below the ridge and traversed all the way to the right until a big bench/cairn showed up. Then we regrouped and reached the summit together.

The ‘crux’ mentioned in Kane’s book can be avoided by staying below the ridge and traversing all the way towards the summit, unless you really feel the need of setting foot on the hightest point of Sheol.

Thanks everyone for another fine day in the mountains. Thanks Jeff and JS for driving us. À la prochaine!
