This event was to be an easy evening hike, soaking in the sun and lazing by the river. Starting at the trailhead at 3:50pm, it started like that. Right out of Cobble Flats we didn't find the trail that 'goes left', and figured we didn't care, instead opting to go along the river, which is where we expected to return. It was beautiful, hot and sunny, with the off piece of flagging marking our way. After about 4km we saw a cliff, figured we'd get clipped out, but with three hours of daylight figured we'd explore. We found a small animal path through, then bushwhacked, and bushwhacked some more. As we were nearing Beaver Lodge, we decided to keep going and around 6:30pm arrived at a closed campground where we had our pick of sites. We chose a picnic table right along the river and had a feast - lots of cheeses, sausage, fish, cucumber concoctions, soup, and cupcakes. And three bottles of wine for four of us. We enjoyed it and around 9pm went back on our way. A beautiful full moon, reflecting off the water and fresh snow on some peaks, lit our way. Unfortunately what we expected to be a 4km return (intending to shortcut down a slope back to the car) wouldn't have been wise in the dark, so we ended up hiking some extra distance. Around 10:40pm and after 15km we were done, all happy to have enjoyed a beautiful summer evening.
