Write Up:
The weather looked just awful this morning but seven hardy souls persevered. This project takes place on the same day all across Canada so is not something that can be rescheduled. I SINCERELY appreciate the determination of all who stuck it out! As the morning progressed it actually became quite pleasant.

Interesting what we found along the way . . . old fire hoses, two deflated rafts, an air mattress, MANY cigarette butts, socks, shoes, shirts, broken glass, beverage containers, wrappers, six-pack holders, strapping materials, etc, etc. I can see the importance of getting out there to clean up all the trash that eventually makes its way into the waterways, lakes and oceans. Our group collected a large assortment of man-made litter to add to the research data. Surprise to me - I had no idea there were so many homeless shelters within that small area :(

For someone else who may be considering coordinating a group in the future:
* I like this area and would recommend it again. Although only four blocks in length, we pulled out a huge amount of trash and all agreed that a group size of 20 or more would be preferred next time in order to get through it quicker.
* 2-3 hrs is the preferred work time so volunteers can get on with their day.
* Advise participants to prepare for all weather conditions - today was a toque, warm gloves, heavy jacket, and rain pants day. A couple of people brought heavy-duty (industrial strength) rubber gloves which were awesome for this job. The little rubber gloves they gave us worked - and even fit over a light pair of gloves - but wouldn't stand up to much wear.
