Sun, Feb 23 2025 - Rawson Lake - Snowshoe (View Original Event Details)

We left the sunny warm weather of Calgary to brave the very wintery conditions of Peter Lougheed Provincial Park to snowshoe Rawson Lake Trail on this last Sunday of February 2025.
We assembled in the parking lot after a somewhat nervy drive as a merry band of
thirteen, but unfortunately one of the group had to turn back due to equipment issues. After
a quick round of introductions, our merry band of twelve set out just before 11am.
The trail was in pretty good condition and quite wonderful to look at! It was a toss-up
whether snowshoes were needed, but the consensus was they were more useful than not; we
certainly packed the trail down for subsequent hikers. The weather forecast of 1C, snow
and light winds was completely correct and made for great hiking temperatures. We had nice
views of Upper Kananaskis Lake and Mount Indefatigable on the first leg of the trail before
turning left up towards Rawson Lake.
The 2.2km climb through the trees was at a relaxed pace but still a good work out, with
very good quality snowball-making snow along the way. Once we made it to Rawson Lake we
were greeted with epic views of Mt. Sarrail. We ate a quick lunch in relatively nice winter
conditions (featuring some wonderful cookies for dessert!). The wind kicked up a bit so we
started the descent back which was much much quicker than the way up. The sun peaked
out to make some very picturesque views of the surrounding mountains and we were at the
parking lot around 2:30pm.
Thanks so much to everyone for coming out and making this a super event!
