What an awesome hike! Total distance: 16km Total elevation gain: 900m 3 marmots, 2 pikas, herd of elk Starting from the Mt. Norquay parking lot, we walked along a quiet, lush path, tripped over some bear scat, and descended down towards 40 mile creek (a herd of grazing elk were seen at the top of the mountain ahead of us). On the creek bridge, we stopped to take some pictures, then made our ascent, puffing and panting, to the bowl. We at our lunch on the rocks while enjoying the marvelous views of the mountain peaks around us, some pikas made an appearance during our lunch. After lunch we completed the last part of the hike by venturing to the end of the trail. On our way, Ken noticed 2 marmots on the rocks to our right. At this point, our adventurous and curious group walked across the loose rocks (a hike in itself!) until we reached the inside of the bowl where we took some pictures to commemorate our efforts. After the hike, we finished the day by enjoying some refreshments at a local pub in Banff. Special thanks goes to Barbara and Brian who brought their GPS systems and provided us with distance and elevation info during the hike, and to Veronika who didn't mind staying behind while we explored the bowl.
