Distance: ~9.7 km approx.
Elevation Gain: ~100 m

We'll start from the Peter Lougheed Visitors Centre and connect to the Penstock Loop trail after approx. 2 kms. The Penstock Loop snowshoe trail is well marked and crosses the Smith-Dorrien a couple of times. We will also be checking out the water pipe to see if the ice "sculptures" have formed yet.

We will be travelling at a slow to moderate pace.

- snowshoes
- poles are strongly recommended
- hiking boots + gaiters, or winter boots
- rentals are available, if required, at U of C Outdoor Centre or MEC
- lunch, munchies + drinks
- lots of warm layers!

How to Get There:
Event Directions:Take Hwy 1 west out of town. Go south on Hwy 40 for approx 56 km. Turn right onto the Kananaskis Lakes Trail just before the winter gate. Follow the signs to the Peter Lougheed Visitors Centre. See Peter Lougheed Map.

Carpool Cost: Approximate vehicle expense for this event is $90.00 (calculated at total Km * $0.30, effective Saturday, April 20, 2024). This is based on $0.16/Km for maintenance, plus current gas price divide by 9. Alternately your carpool driver may choose to split the maintenance cost plus the actual gas cost among all in the vehicle. This event occurs on an official snowshoe trail and does not enter avalanche terrain.
We will be stopping at the Peter Lougheed Visitor Centre and will check on current trail conditions and avalanche risk prior to beginning the event.
Note that COC event coordinators are volunteers and are not trained guides. All participants are responsible for assessing the current road conditions, current weather conditions, current trail conditions and current avalanche conditions for the trip.
