CHESTER LAKE & ELEPHANT ROCKS
~11 km return ~340 m elevation gain Please plan to meet at carpool about 10 min before departure time so we can get organized and leave right on time Kananaskis Country offers wonderful
opportunities for snowshoeing. Chester lake
snowshoe trail is well marked for our safety and
enjoyment. This trail is for intermediate
snowshoers located on safe terrain with good
scenery. This is NOT for beginners! It is a challenging trail through the trees which brings you to a tiny lake beneath an imposing rock face. On the way down, it's great fun free-wheeling in usually deep, deep snow. At
the Elephant Rocks, the lunch spot, plan to be
there for a little while to enjoy the scenery and take photos, so come prepared to stay warm.
Please remember, when snowshoeing on shared trails with skiers let's make sure we don't walk or snowshoe on the ski tracks. Note that this event requires driving several kilometres up the Smith-Dorrien Road, which is a gravel road, and can be icy/treacherous. Be sure your vehicle is ready for winter conditions.
| |||||||
How to Get There: | |||||||
Event Directions: | Take Hwy 1 west out of town, 64km roughly
Go south on Hwy 40 for approx 50km. Turn right onto Kananaskis Lakes Trail just before the winter gate. Turn north onto the Smith-Dorrien Trail (gravel road) and go about 23km. Park at the Chester Lake trail head (past Sawmill). There is an obvious sign for Chester Lake. Click here for a map
