Itinerary: | |||||||
I'll try to turn these into Wednesday evening backpack
training hikes where we explore a different park in or around
the city each week - rain or shine and covering about
6 - 7km. The aim will be to find
dirt/gravel
paths and be out for a couple of hours with a full
overnight backpack for training. Suffer in the city now,
then
enjoy the backpacking trips :-). I'll start with a backpack
weighing
around 35 pounds, then increase the weight around 5 pounds
each
week. Come out for some backpacking conditioning,
get/share trip
ideas, and just enjoy a weeknight out.
This week's park: This route is a mix of gradual climbs, flat stretches, and dips into aspen-filled coules. Aspen groves give shelter to a wide variety of plants and animals from the winds that frequently hit Nose Hill. While in the coulees, keep a lookout for sheltering great horned owls, American robins, song sparrows, deer, white-tailed hare, and prairie long-tailed weasels.
