THIS TRIP DOES PASS THROUGH SIMPLE CLASS 1 AVALANCHE TERRAIN AS DEFINED BY PARKS CANADA. IN THE EVENT THAT THE AVALANCHE RATING IS HIGH OR ABOVE THIS EVENT WILL BE CANCELLED This is a first paid, first to go event. Payment by e-banking/paypal must be sent directly to me at ian.gammack@gmail.com. Please put yourself on the waiting list and send me payment. After I receive your payment I will move you onto the registered list. This is a backcountry ski trip 14KM one way to a primitive shelter with a wood stove, where we will spend 2 nights enjoying heat, good food, good company and perhaps a game of cards. The next day we will either go to Assiniboine or Marvel Lake. This is a relatively flat ski trip with a gradual up and down although it could be somewhat challenging due to possible trail breaking and/or a narrow, icy trail, and a little steep in a few places. There is one reasonably long, steep hill. All participants must be reasonably fit and prepared for a possible workout. We will, though, have all day to reach the shelter. We will need to carry all of our gear except a tent. Distance: 14 kms one way. Vertical gain: Minimal, gradual down and then up to shelter Topographic maps: 82 J/14, 82 J/13. Gem Trek recreational map: Banff and Mount Assiniboine Description: From Mt. Shark parking lot (off Smith Dorrien Road, 43 kms south of the town of Canmore), take the Watridge Lake Trail to the Banff National Park boundary (approx. 5.5 km) then continue on the Bryant Creek Trail to the shelter for another 8.3 kms. Total ski to shelter is 13.8 kms. There are two dorm rooms with plain plywood platforms for sleeping. Possible excursions to Marvel Lake from shelter. http://www.parkscanada.gc.ca/pn -np/ab/banff/activ/activ33jj_e.asp/ I am not a trained person. Each person on this trip is expected to be prepared and take care of themselves. | |||||||
