We are very pleased to inform you that the Calgary Outdoor Club (COC) will subsidize 50% of the Map and Compass Course. The U of C has kindly offered to customize this course for COC only-not offered to the general public. The total cost per person is $ 30.00 + GST. COC will subsidize $30.00 + GST and each selected participant will be asked to pay in advance the remaining $ 30.00 + GST. This course includes instruction and materials. The morning session will take place at U of C(indoors/classroom) and in the afternoon you will carpool to a park to practise.

In this era of GPS assisted navigation, hikers may be tempted to forego carrying a map and compass. But it's important to understand that a GPS receiver does not replace these tools, which do not rely on batteries or satellite signals to function. A detailed topo map and a compass should still be the primary tools for navigation in the wilderness.

Therefore, come on out and learn the basics of navigating with map and compass. With a focus on topographic maps. Exercises will teach you to read contour lines, identify features, keep track of your location, and integrate the compass into use with the map, including bearings, route following, position-finding, and planning.
