Itinerary:
ICELAND BACKCOUNTRY HIKING OPPORTUNITY

Firstly, a huge thanks to those who came to the first planning meeting.

Everyone signing up will be automatically placed on the waitlist. The first people to be added to the event, will be those who attended our first meeting (whether in person, or by corresponding with me through email). If anyone from the first meeting drops off, I will add participants from the waitlist based on COC experience and involvement.

The last day’s hike will involve carrying your backcountry pack for 25kms with an elevation gain of 900M in the first 5kms (thereafter it’s downhill). The average day’s hike is about 15kms. There are not too many steep sections except the first and last days. While we will be soaking in the incredible scenery and taking lots of pictures, we don’t want to spend 10 to 12 hrs for hiking 12 to 15kms. We would aim to do our hikes in 5-6 hrs, leaving ourselves time to do excursions from our campsite.

Given that this region has volatile arctic weather – on average one person dies on this trail every two years -- we will be sticking to our group the entire time. There will be no lone-wolves charging kms ahead and no slow-pokes kms behind.

I have now done extensive research on the trail (Laugavegur) and am ready to share more detailed information with those interested in the trip. I’ve also invested almost $40 on a nat-geo map and a book specific to the trail.

Here is the agenda for our next meeting:
(1) Laugavegur trail description – challenges, options
(2) Dates (trail is open late June to late early September. We will hike Aug 15-22).
(3) Flights (My trip is Aug 12-30. Flying from Edmonton).
(4) Camping & hut options, booking
(5) Bus booking (Reykjavik to Landmannalauger; and Skogar to Reykjavik)
(6) Medical needs, insurance
(7) Gear (camping, cooking, rain, cold, GPS, cellphone)
(8) Food & drink
(9) Photography
(10) Side trips (Ring Road, Skaftafell, summit Mt Hekla?)
(11) Any other topics of interest to the group.
