· This event is dependent on weather and water conditions. We will not go out in poor weather, high winds, or within 30 minutes of a lightning strike.
Should it not be an obviously nice day and the event would need to be cancelled, you will receive an e-mail the day of the event.
· You should have paddled at least once before.
· Safeyt equipment listed below is mandatory or you will not be allowed to attend.
· When you sign up, please indicate in the Notes field if you need to:
     1) rent a canoe (see more info below),
     2) are a Canoe Club member (and therefore have access to canoes and kayaks at the dock),
     3) wish to share a canoe with your coordinator, or
     4) have your own boat (indicate canoe or kayak) and will meet us at the dock.
If you do not indicate your preference, you will be automatically moved to the wait list.

Overview & Itinerary:
I am intending to turn these into weekly paddling sessions late enough in the evenings for those of us working until 5:00pm to attend. The day may vary from week to week, but I will begin by posting these events for Thursday evenings, or possibly some Tuesday evenings, and continue these through the end of September or early October.

We will begin paddling at 6:15pm, so arrive a bit earlier if you need to rent a canoe and get checked in. At least for the month of June, we will paddle mostly towards the Weaselhead area and explore a bit there. Expect around 5-7km round trip over the course of a couple of hours. We will be off the water at 8:15pm in order to return all boats before close at 8:30pm. Evenings should be great for spotting wildlife.

Boat Availability & Preference:
I have set up these sessions so that people can attend without owning their own canoe or kayak. The following are choices for getting access to a boat (you can use either a canoe or kayak):

1) Rent a canoe from the Calgary Canoe Club. Note that canoes cannot be reserved in advance, and kayaks are not rented to non-members. Canoe rentals are $25 for the boat (which is shared between two people). Rentals are first-come-first-serve.

2) Become a member of the Calgary Canoe Club for $150 (including GST). This allows you to use their canoes and kayaks as often as you like through October 12, 2016. This is the option your coordinator has gone with. Note that boats (canoes or kayaks) cannot be reserved in advance, but I have been told that they have only ever run out of boats once or twice, and weeknights have much more availability than weekends. If you choose to go this route, you must print off the Membership Form and Waiver from the Calgary Canoe Club website and bring it with you the first time you go there.

3) Share a canoe with your coordinator.

4) If you have your own canoe or kayak, you can meet us at the dock at 6:15pm.

Safety & Bylaws:
No instruction will be given and it is assumed that you can navigate a canoe or kayak. The focus will be on small groups (maximum 6 or 8 people), and we will stay together at all times. You will not be allowed to paddle on your own.

The following equipment is required or you will not be allowed to attend:

· A Transport Canada, Coast Guard, or Department of Oceans & Fisheries-approved personal flotation device (PFD) or lifejacket of appropriate size.
Note that Transport Canada recognizes those with the ULC stamp on the inside.
Models must be from 2012 or later. This must be worn at all times when on the water on COC events.
· A sound signalling device - such as a whistle or horn
· A buoyant heaving line at least 15m long - typically a throw bag
· A bailer - cup, pail, bilge pump, etc.
· A Navigation light if operating after or before sunset or in periods of restricted visibility - such as a waterproof flashlight

Interested in a Multi-Day trip to Canoe Bowron Lakes?
Your coordinator will be canoeing the Bowron Lakes Circuit (116km, 8 days) in early July. If you are someone I know and you'd be interested in this as well, let's talk.
