LAKE O’HARA AREA, 3-DAYS OF AWESOME HIKING, 2 NIGHTS IN THE ELIZABETH PARKER HUT

The Lake O'Hara area is one of the most beautiful places on earth. We will get to enjoy the hut and the company of other nature lovers who will be there that weekend.

We will be carpooling in groups based on the area of town you live in and each group will go in a single vehicle.

ITINERARY:
Day 1 (Sat, May 19):
• Depart Calgary from your agreed upon carpool location 7:00am
• Drive to Lake O’Hara car park off of Hwy 1 to arrive at 9:00am
• Hike up the 11km road to the Elizabeth Parker Hut (anticipated arrival around noon)
• Claim sleeping berths; quick lunch; leave our packs at EP Hut
• For those interested, we will do an afternoon hike.
• Return to EP Hut, dinner, card/board games, astrophotography for the enthusiasts (if the skies are clear!)

Day 2 (Sun, May 20):
• Breakfast
• Choose from many options of hikes or scrambles, depending on the amount of snow still around - i.e. Hike the lakes loop around Lakes O’Hara, Opabin, Hungabee, Moors, Cascade, & Mary
• Return to EP Hut in the late afternoon
• Dinner, card/board games, astrophotography (if the skies are clear!)

Day 3 (Mon, May 21):
• A leisurely breakfast
• Pack bags, clean hut and leave for the 11km hike back to the vehicles.
• Drive back to Calgary

EP Hut is equipped with gas stoves and utensils. No need to bring those. The hut no longer has cooler boxes. So don’t count on fresh food or uncooked meats to last the whole weekend. Sleeping is dorm-style. Just bring your sleeping bag, and if you’re a light sleeper, ear plugs. There’s always a snorer (or two)!

If we are able to do some scrambling, please bring your helmet is it will be mandatory to participate in any scrambling hikes in the area.. Though there isn’t much exposure, the helmet is to keep us safe from rock-fall.

Please have your bear spray in an accessible place (e.g. on a holster or pant pocket, and not in the bottom of the backpack).

If you have questions send me an email or call me.

Winter Safety Considerations
This information entered by Lorrie Wazny on March 5, 2018
Terrain Classification: Simple (Class-1)
The Lake O'Hara fire road and south shore of lake O'Hara is rated Class-1 terrain. The north shore of Lake O'Hara and Opabin Plateau is rated Class-2 terrain. We will have to wait closer to the event date to determine what the avalanche risk will be to determine which day hiking we can do. Should the avalanche danger rise to High or Extreme at any elevation on the day of the event, it will be cancelled.

Note that COC event coordinators are volunteers and are not trained guides. All participants are responsible for assessing the current road conditions, current weather conditions, current trail conditions and current avalanche conditions for the trip.
