The COC Training Program

The objectives of the Calgary Outdoor Club Training Program are to:
   a) provide educational sessions to members;
   b) raise awareness about different aspects of the outdoors
   c) increase the members' safety while enjoying their activities in the mountains    and
   d) provide everyone the opportunity to ask pertinent questions.

SESSION:

Learn the basics of hiking to lead you into the many trails and hikes in our spectacular mountains in our own back yard! Topics to be covered include:

  1. Required and recommended gear
  2. How to use your gear
  3. Safety considerations
  4. How to get started / Checklist

We will begin the morning with a talk on the above topics and orientation on the gear, followed by an approximate 10 km hike in the extensive trail system at the Glenbow Ranch (total elevation gain of approx. 100 to 200 meters).

Along the way, we will discuss the basics of hiking, how to work your way from easy hikes to more moderate hikes and field any questions the group may have. We will also stop and enjoy the views and take pictures. We will break for lunch/snack around noon and carry on for another hour or two, depending on how the group feels.
