Itinerary:
Important - Read:
This is an early season event at a relaxed pace. We will attain three summits, starting with the smallest and ending with the largest: first Stoney Squaw, then Tunnel Mountain, and lastly Sulphur Mountain. We will then take the free gondola down and go to the hot springs before heading home. You must attend all portions of this event (3 hikes + hot springs + carpool) in order to sign up. Please review full event description for specifics of heach hike, as well as costs.

Total Elevation Gain for the day:1,124m
Total Distance for the day:14.1km

Approximate Plan for the Day:
8:30am sharp - Depart carpool
10:00 - 11:45- Summit #1: Stoney Squaw
12:00 - 1:45 - Summit #2: Tunnel Mountain
2:00 - 5:00 - Summit #3: Sulphur Mountain + free gondola ride down
5:30 - 6:45 - Hot Springs

Summit #1: Stoney Squaw:
Elevation Gain:184m
Distance:4.5km (return)

This is a short "hike travels almost entirely through aromatic forest. In cool shade there are intermittent carpets of lush moss which are easy underfoot. Much of the trail is cushioned with pine needles. There are very few vistas through dense forest but the advantage is a peaceful walk in nature. Periodically there are patches of rock outcroppings rich in fossil content and the hike continues down the other side of Stoney Squaw for another couple of kilometers before turning back." Summit #2: Tunnel Mountain:
Elevation Gain:270m
Distance:4.4km (return)

Tunnel Mountain, also known as Sleeping Buffalo, is another short Banff hike, but one that will begin to provide some more views. It has well-graded switchbacks to the top.

Summit #3: Sulphur Mountain:
Elevation Gain:700m
Distance:5.2km (up only; we will take the gondola down)

While we will stick together as a group for both Stoney Squaw and Tunnel Mountain, Sulphur Mountain is utilized by many as an early season training hike. Great switchbacks lead all the way to the top and here you will have the opportunity to go at your own pace if you wish to time yourself. I ask that everyone attains the summit in ~2 hours, which seems to be a relaxed pace here. We will then all meet on the top floor (with the observation terrace), eat our packed dinners there, and then take the free gondola ride down together.

Banff Hot Springs:
From the base of the gondola we head back to our cars, drop the hiking gear, and get our swimwear. Relax - you've earned it :-).
