Hike / Easy Scramble Description:
This event will be going at a relaxed pace. We are out to enjoy the day and event duration may vary. Please note that as long as the weather is nice, we will be taking an extended (i.e., half hour) break at each of the two summits: Heart Mountain and Grant MacEwan Peak.

Heart Mountain is described an easy scramble with one moderate (3 metre) step on the northwest ridge. It can often be ascended year-round thanks to the chinooks that blast the route bare, and "remains a favourite early season pilgrimage where you can reintroduce flabby muscles to the rigours of steep hiking" (Kane). 800m of elevation gain occur on the slabs between km 1 and 4. We will take our time on this uphill stretch, stop for lunch after the initial ascent, and then continue on to complete the loop. Note that we will encounter sections of snow and ice. Microspikes/icers are mandatory or you will not be allowed to attend.

Fun Stuff - How High Are Those Mountains?
Are you like me and record all the summits you attain, but then wonder how accurate those GPS units or altimeter watches really are? Bring your toys along and we can all compare on these two high points.

Last July a guest post was featured on the Dafferns' Kananaskis Trails blog pondering the accuracy of mountains heights in Kananaskis Country. Take a read here. It's fascinating to learn how those early explorers first measured the heights of these mountains. Now, with access to cutting-edge equipment, Gérard Lachapelle (Professor Emeritus, Department of Geomatics Engineering, University of Calgary and an avid hiker), remeasures Alberta mountain peaks, one hike at a time".

How high will we really go today?
