This adventurous hike takes you through forest and meadows to 2380m Burstall Pass. We may still see the larches in their glory, as well as the glaciated north face of Mt. Sir Douglas.

At the outset the trail crosses open meadows below Mud Lake. You pass a left branching trail as you start to climb on old logging roads through the forest. Immediately, you veer right following trail markers and continue along the wide, rolling road that leads into the valley. The surface is hard-packed with few rocks. After Burstall Lakes, the road reverts to a narrow hiking trail.

Soon you escape the forest at the edge of an alluvial plain. To your left sits impressive Robertson Glacier whose meltwater has washed down the gravel that covers the valley floor. From here a steep and rooty path leads quickly to treeline and meadows bristling with western anemonies.

After this brief respite, you begin the final ascent to the pass. There from your windswept vantage point far above treeline, you are rewarded with magnificent views that sweep from Mt. Birdwood in the north to Mt. Sir Douglas in the south. Continue a short way west of the pass for views of Leman Lake and the Spray Valley to the west.

Ref: GemTrek's Kananaskis Lakes map.

The pace will be steady. We will be staying together as a group.

Note: For those willing to drive, we will have to drive on the Smith Dorrien Road which is gravel.

We are out to enjoy the day and duration may vary, please do not sign up if you need to be back for another commitment.
