Important - READ:

A Walk in the Woods: Nature Explorer, Foraging, Exploring

This will not be a typical hike where we aim straight for our destination. Instead, this outing is aimed at slowing down in nature and ‘smelling the roses’, with an emphasis on the following:

Plant Identification: I’d like to take the time to learn about plants, trees, and other things in the forest. We’ll find spots to stop and learn together (I’m just learning at the same time, so am not an instructor). You are strongly encouraged to bring things like plant identification guides and the like. Perhaps we can all learn five new plants together.

Foraging: Did you know that you can make tea from spruce tips? Or from rosehips? Maybe gather some materials for a fall arrangement or wreath? In Public Land Use Zones one is permitted to forage or take a small amount of plant clippings for personal use. The goal is to find a few items to take home, so bring clippers and a bag. (I have been in touch with a Government of Alberta Lands Officer, who has confirmed that this is allowed in Public Land Use Zones, which also exist within the Kananaskis Country Improvement District. The map will be e- mailed to participants beforehand).

Forest Bathing: Many of us find nature and quiet areas re-energizing. Have you ever paid attention to how much trees sway? The sounds of the forest when not speaking? The textures around you? We'll take moments to be quiet, sit, and observe. Bring something to sit on, like a Thermarest or foam pad, as the ground will most likely be wet in places.

The Hike

Distance: Approximately 11-12km
Trailhead Elevation: 1,610m
High Point: 1,750m
Net Elevation Gain: 140m
Total Elevation Gain: Maybe 200-250m
Terrain: On-trail (10km), off-trail (about 1.2-1.5km), water crossing (wide, shallow, bring water crossing footwear & towel)
Pace: Relaxed
Sunset: 6:43pm

We will be hiking a counter-clockwise loop, first following the beginning of the Mount Glasgow Route, then smaller paths with possible meadows and off-trail forest floor, and will then meet an old fire road for the last 3km. Description:
Taigo Viewpoint is an exploratory hike beyond Fox Lake and Frozen Lake. If you have been to the area of West Elk Pass/Elk Pass, you've likely seen this minor peak above the meadow.
