I'm maybe thinking of doing a week long backpacking trip on a section of the Great Divide Trail at the end of July/Early August (depending on permit availability).
Plan A - Spray Lakes to Hawks Creek; or
Plan B - Waterton to Castle Mountain
Small group. This meeting to gather a small group of interested people who want to do this in a ultra-light backpacking fashion.
We did a short section in 2019 and now for another section in 2020!

The Great Divide Trail traverses the continental divide between Alberta and British Columbia, wandering through the vast wilderness of the Canadian Rocky Mountains for more than 1100 kilometres. It is one of the most spectacular and challenging long‐distance trails on the planet. The Great Divide Trail is not officially signed and not always even an actual trail, sometimes merely a wilderness route, inspiring modern-day adventurers to walk the same paths of the original explorers to the area. A journey on the Great Divide Trail promises to be demanding but on the GDT you'll discover a definitive wilderness experience in one of the most magnificent settings on Earth.
The section I’m thinking of has views of Mt Assiniboine, Healy Pass and Pharaoh Peaks. While the Great Divide Trail is a recognized hiking trail, only portions of it are officially recognized by Parks Canada and therefore is often not signed and occasionally not even an actual trail - merely a wilderness route. At present, the total Great Divide Trail is about 75% singletrack, 10% wilderness route and 15% old roads and ATV trails.

The less you carry the less huffing and puffing needed.
My definition of ultra-light is a total gear weight of backpack and belt stuff totaling under 30lbs including food and water but not including clothing worn and hiking poles. There will be training trips organized for participants.
This trail promises lots of awesome views but also needs some orienteering in some sections, it’s for the strong willed, healthy bodied, experienced, well prepared backpacker only, one who adheres to low impact wilderness camping rules. It is only fun if you are prepared.
Will be organizing training trips leading up to this including winter backpacking trips.

The distance is approximately 85km and 2400m in total elevation gain (see bit about ultra- light). We’ll be averaging about 15km a day.
Expected trip time will be between 5 to 6 days.
Could be more, could be less, depending on how fast or slow we move or on conditions.
A car shuttle is needed between trail heads so will need enough drivers.

This trip is for hikers who are
- Not uptight about stuff, routes, conditions, in other words fun anything goes
- can manage ultra-light backpacking on their own for gear. There will be very little group gear unless you’re paired up with a buddy
- be a bit flexible with the timing depending on the permits we are able to obtain
- able to walk long distances through rough terrain with a pack
- prepared to have an isolated wilderness experience
- have lots of stamina
- free of recurring knee, back or ankle injuries
No experience is necessary at this point to go on the trip. However by the start of the trip you should be a seasoned pro with the training back-country backpacking trips I'll put on. (It's really Ben's plan to go camping in the snow).
Reservations to purchase the trail permits and campsite permits opens towards end Jan 2020 and will need payment once I book the permits. Approx permits wil cost around $60 to $70, likely to be towards the lower end but until we book, then we'll know for sure.
