Note that June 5th is our first choice for date, but we are reserving the right to change it to June 12th as a back-up if conditions are not right on June 5th. This section of highway 40 is closed to motorized vehicles until June 15. All we have to watch out for are cyclists, animals and snow. Bring extra clothes - wind chill can be a huge issue on the downhills. This is the highest paved point in Canada I believe, so an interesting ride for that reason. NOTE that we will be doing an out-and-back trip, with a designated turn-around time. The entire trip is described below and all will ride out until no later than 2:00pm at which time you must turn around and return to the vehicles. If you don't make it all the way to the end, then where you are at 2:00pm *is* the end. Entire trip is described as: We will cycle up to Highwood Pass from the north winter gate at the turnoff to Kananaskis Lakes Trail. The distance is 17 kms (34 kms return) and elevation gain is 500 metres (if you turn around at the top of Highwood Pass). There will be no official lunch/snack stops - gauge your time and stop for your breaks as needed.
Advanced riders can ride further down the South
side if 17km isn't far enough AND IF the road
is
clear. Turn around is still 2PM. But hey, you
get 2 downhills! Note that the Kananaskis Pass takes effect on June 1, so be prepared to buy one on your way in to the park. | |||||||
