Backpacking has never been easier!!
We will start nice and early on Saturday morning at the Barrier Lake Dam and hike ~ 5kms (with no elevation!) to the Jewell Bay Backcountry Campground which is located at the far end of Barrier Lake Set up camp and if some of you so wish, proceed to Prairie View Lookout via Jewell Pass for the views. Some might want to soak in the lake or if you manage to lug a raft in, go floating on the lake. Then we'll hang around the campfire for dinner and regale each other with tales or have a round of cards or find other forms of amusement. It's pretty much a laid back affair. Itinerary update: There will be a potluck BBQ that night so bring what you like and share some of the love... uh.. I mean food love. This is an easy/intro to backpacking trip for people that always wanted to try backpacking but dreaded a long hike with a lot of elevation carrying a heavy pack. You still must be fit enough to carry a heavy pack for ~ 5 kms. Due to the limited number of tent pads, we can only take a max of 7 tents. If we can have 2 people per tent, we can increase the # of people going. You need to bring backpacking gear including a tent, sleeping bag (good to 0C), stove, fuel, pots, dish, water and food. Each person will be responsible for their own gear but you may want to pair up with someone. You need to be able to carry all your gear in a backpack. You can rent a backpacking pack and tent at MEC or UofC. You also need warm clothes because it often gets below zero at night. The campground is kinda nice, with available water from the lake (you need to boil to drink), flat tent pads next to the lake, picnic tables, vault toilets, firepit, firewood and pack lockers.
